Just like the unmarked spaces in cemeteries, or unmarked stones, where ancestors are buried without names. Writing poetry about these ancestors gives them a voice. Through imagination and empathy, you can honor their existence and fill those quiet gaps with tenderness, respect, and curiosity. Poetry helps us ask: Who were you? It’s also about adaptation. Newly planted immigrants, even if they’re meeting family and friends in a new land, need to learn new customs, possibly a new language, find work, and build community. It's tradition. It's the passing down of values, stories, songs, and dances that shape who we are. What we leave behind after we're gone is our legacy, and it can create an imprint on future generations, even if those generations are not blood. Poetry gives us a way to reflect on how we look back and how we look forward, providing a perspective that deserves to be written.

Note: When my mother died, she left behind so many things that I didn't know about. My father also didn't know. She didn't share her past, which makes me wonder why she saved some of the things she did. Those items now have no meaning for me or anyone else. It would be as if she left behind a headdress, like the ones shown in the photo above, because the item was that disorienting for us. Stories are important, folks. If there are no stories, even about things brought down through generations, there is no history. Even if those stories cannot be proven, they fall into the category of myth. Myths are a form of truth.

Share

🖋️Poetry Form Spotlight: Pantoum

The pantoum is a repeating form where the second and fourth lines of each stanza become the first and third lines of the next stanza. This cycle mimics the way family history and memory circle back through generations. It is a natural fit for exploring lineage and legacy.

For me, this is a difficult poetry form because I always end up feeling it's stilted and too formal. But I learned, over time and with practice, that if I treat the form more like a song with a refrain, I achieve better results. Here are some definitions and examples to explore:

Pantoum: Wikipedia

How To Write a Pantoum Poem: Writers dot com

Pen a Pantoum: Asian Art Museum

How To Write a Pantoum: The Poetry Place

✍️Mini-Prompt

Write a pantoum where each repeated line highlights something passed down in your family, such as an heirloom, a saying, a recipe, or a tradition. That's a good way to start with this poetry form.

💬 Call to action

When you finish your poem, consider sharing it at a family gathering. It can be a beautiful way to celebrate what continues across generations.

For more resources, such as poems about lineages and legacies and a checklist to use before you write your own poem, go to this week’s article at Goin’ Poetic.

Thanks for reading Goin’ Poetic at Hyperdivergent! Surnames and given names often originate from occupations, places, or even an ancestor's characteristic. A surname ties us to our ancestors, their stories, their origins, and their languages. A given name might reflect an effort to carry on a mother's surname. Names can be sources of pride, shame, curiosity, or mystery. If you write a poem about your name, you'll have to dig into your ancestry to learn the hows and whys of the origins of your name, right? When you conduct that research, you're also learning more about yourself and how your name shapes your identity, both public and private.

🖋️ Poetry Form Spotlight: Acrostic Poem

In an acrostic poem, the first letters of each line spell out a word. Perfect form to test on your surname. For instance, the first letters in each line in this poem spell out my surname:

Grandpa Goin said our surname came from
Our urges to travel, to constantly move
In and out of towns and states of mind.
Nomads we were, and continue to be.

How to write an acrostic poem from Poetry For Kids (yeah, that's the easy way to learn!).

✍️ Mini-Prompt

Write an acrostic using your surname. Each line should include a story, image, or feeling that connects to your family identity. I'm sorry if you have a long surname, but you'll be a better acrostic poet in the long run!

💬 Call to action

Don't write your poem alone! Sit down with your family to write an acrostic poem. You might be surprised how this exercise will lead to other name poems. Additionally, you may inspire others to explore the roots of your name with you and uncover stories you've never heard. HAVE FUN.

Thanks for reading Goin’ Poetic at Hyperdivergent! They shape our stories in big and small ways, positively or negatively, through their work, their habits, or from the wisdom they pass along. Poetry provides a format to honor these men in our lives and to explore the bonds that connect us across generations, whether we knew them or not.

🖋️ Poetry Form Spotlight: Haiku Sonnet

A haiku sonnet combines the simplicity of haiku with the tradition of the 14-line sonnet. Each stanza follows a 5-7-5 syllable pattern, creating 14 short moments strung together. This form is wonderful for capturing glimpses of a father or grandfather and to share word images that seem ordinary but hold deep meaning.

Learn more:

Haiku Sonnet: Writer's Digest

Haiku Sonnet: Haiku Streak

The Haiku Sonnet: Astra Poetica

✍️ Mini-Prompt

Think of one object that reminds you of your father or grandfather. A mother, grandmothers, great-aunt, or sister...a figure whose influence still ripples through generations. These heroines may have carried traditions, told stories, or quietly kept families whole during hard times by taking in children, burying loved ones, or paying debts. Poetry gives us the chance to recognize their heroics, bringing their voices into a spotlight they may not have had in life.

🖋️ Poetry Form Spotlight

Let's try a Haiku Sonnet next week. Not as difficult as you might think, but you need to know how to write a haiku. So, haiku it is for this week! Haiku consists of three lines with syllable counts of 5-7-5. That's the Americanized version, and it's so wrong, but still right. If that's all the knowledge about haiku you want, then you're good to go. If you want to learn more about the subtleties of this poetic form, I've left you with a few links.

Haiku - Wikipedia

Haiku Revisited - Robert Lee Brewer, Writer's Digest

Can anyone explain in short how haiku is written? - Reddit

10 Vivid Haikus to Leave You Breathless - Read Poetry

40 Haiku Poem Examples Everyone Should Know About - Reedsy

Note that many of these haiku examples are about nature. That's the key. However, you can write a haiku on any subject. Just keep it clear, concise, and clean. Haiku provides the bones for a thought.

✍️ Mini-Prompt:

Let's satisfy your possible craving for a longer poem. Write an elegy for a matriarch in your family, weaving in one tradition or saying she passed down.

💬 Call to Action:

Honor the women who shaped your family tree. Memorial poems don’t just mark the end of a life. They celebrate the soul of the person who lived it. For those who served in war, poetry can become a sacred space where duty, sacrifice, and love are remembered with care. Whether you’re writing about a relative, a stranger on a gravestone, or a group of the unnamed, memorial poetry allows you to reflect, honor, and carry forward a legacy that might otherwise fade into silence.

🖋️ Poetry Form Spotlight: The Elegy

The elegy is a traditional poetic form of mourning. It often follows a three-part structure: grief, praise, and consolation. While you don’t need to stick to a rigid format, an elegy gently guides the poet through the process of remembering, honoring, and finding meaning. It’s especially fitting for military remembrance, where stories of valor and silence often go hand in hand. Your elegy can be for one person, or it can speak to an entire generation.

Elegy: Wikipedia

Elegy: Poets.org

What is an Elegy? Oregon State University School of Writing, Literature, and Film. Give them a name, a moment, and a voice—even if it’s imagined.

💬 Call to Action:

This week, choose one person who served—whether in your family tree or someone you discover through research—and write a poem to honor them. Share it during Memorial Day, Veterans Day, or post it online with their name. Poetry isn’t just art—it’s remembrance. And remembrance keeps stories alive.

Visit this article at Goin’ Poetic to snag a checklist and a reading list for this week’s topic.

Thanks for reading Goin’ Poetic at Hyperdivergent! went to war, many others waited at home. Wives, husbands, fiancées, parents, and children who kept life going on the home front. Some were war brides (or grooms), leaving behind their countries and families for new lives in unfamiliar lands. Others held fast to hope, raising children alone or writing daily letters with no promise of response. These stories are often left in the margins of history, but in poetry, they come alive. The waiting, the worrying, the daydreams, and the routines. You can capture it all with empathy in verse.

🖋️ Poetry Form Spotlight: The Persona Poem

A persona poem is written in the voice of someone else, real or imagined. This form is perfect for exploring the lives of war brides, mothers, or children during wartime. Step into their shoes and speak as they would think and react. What did they feel when the mail didn't come, or when the knock on the door late at night occurred? What was it like to build a new life in a new country or raise a family in uncertainty? Some names are remembered and honored; others are half-remembered, hidden in faded documents, letters, or photographs. Poetry can breathe life into those names, letting your ancestors speak through your pen. Whether they served in battle, behind the scenes, or on the home front, their stories deserve to be told. Poetry provides you with the freedom to tell those stories with feelings.

🖋️ Poetry Form Spotlight: The Narrative Poem

The narrative poem tells a story, with a beginning, middle, and end. It often includes characters, setting, and plot, just like a short story. This form is ideal when you know a specific ancestor’s war story or want to imagine one based on the period. Narrative poems allow room for emotional arc and historical detail, where you can turn a simple fact, “he fought at Gettysburg,” into a vivid, memorable experience.

Check out 25 Narrative Poem Examples, where you can see how the narrative poem works. You'll discover it can be long or short, detailed or vague. With a soldier's story, though, you might want to stick with emotional reality.

✍️ Mini-Prompt:

Write a poem in the voice of an ancestor who served in a war. Use the phrase “I never told anyone, but…” as the opening line. Let the poem reveal something they carried either emotionally or physically (or both).

💬 Call to Action:

Look through old photos, obituaries, or military records. Find one ancestor who served and write a poem that honors their contribution. It doesn’t have to be historically complete. Try for emotional realism. Share the poem in your family newsletter, scrapbook, or poetry blog to help keep their memory alive. I'd be honored if you shared your poems here as well!

Take these tasks to the next level by reading some poetry and books suggested at Goin’ Poetic, along with a checklist of things you might think about before you write your poem. Whether dashed off from muddy trenches or typed from a base overseas, they hold raw emotion, and often in everyday language. For poets, these letters offer more than just facts. They reveal the human heartbeat behind history. By weaving these fragments into poetic stories, we give voice to those who served and those who waited, capturing the quiet bravery and intimate moments war rarely shows.

🖋️ Poetry Form Spotlight: Found Poetry

Found poetry utilizes existing words, sentences, or phrases from letters, journals, or documents and transforms those words into poems. It’s like literary collage. For this theme, you might start with a soldier’s real or imagined letter, highlight key words or phrases, rearrange lines, or even black out certain words to create a new meaning. The original voice stays present, but the poet adds emotional layers or new context. Found poetry is a perfect format for honoring historical voices while making room for creative reflection.

✍️ Mini-Prompt:

Write a found poem from a letter written by someone serving in a war. It can be based on a real ancestor, a historical figure, or someone you imagine. Try to include one physical detail (like a smell, a sound, or a texture) that captures the atmosphere of that moment. You can adapt other individuals' letters to fit your ancestor, as those original letters offer a feel that nothing else will.

💬 Call to Action:

Dig through your family archive or explore public collections of war letters. Find a line that moves you and let it lead you into writing a poem. If you write something that feels meaningful, consider sharing it with your family or donating it to a veterans' oral history project. Poetry can keep memory alive in a deeply human way.

Visit this article at Goin’ Poetic to find poems and books inspired by soldiers' letters and a checklist you can utilize before you begin writing your poem.

Thanks for reading Goin’ Poetic at Hyperdivergent! A single smell can carry us back to grandma’s kitchen, a cousin’s laughter, or a handwritten recipe card stained with coffee and time. In poetry, these food memories become more than just nourishment. They become stories. You can create family recipes and food tradition stories that are rich in detail, emotion, and cultural identity. When you do, you offer readers a savory path into the past and a deeply personal way to preserve it.

🖋️ Poetry Form Spotlight: The Ode

The ode is a lyrical form of praise, perfect for honoring a cherished dish, cook, or mealtime tradition. Odes can be serious or playful, formal or free-verse. Focus on sensory language and emotion: the crackle of bacon, the spice of curry, the warmth of cornbread. Let your ode celebrate not just food, but the stories that come with it.

How to Write an Ode: Ode to Poetry: Danna Smith walks readers through the path to writing odes, or poems of praise.

Ode Poetry: How to Write an Ode Poem: Sean Glatch provides simple steps for writing an ode poem, along with examples.

The Ode: The Poetry Foundation provides a succinct account of what odes are about, along with examples.

💬 Call to Action:

What’s cooking in your family’s story? and even antique shops at the checkout counter. Those voices are preserved in handwritten letters and diaries. These missives hold accounts of daily life, a person's thoughts and hopes, and very real fears. How do you feel when you find a grandmother’s grocery list-turned-note, a parent’s travelogue, or an account of an ancestor preserved in a library's digital resources? You may have realized you just caught a glimpse of a person in a time capsule.

Poetry helps us listen to the details. A letter’s torn edge or coffee stain becomes a "note" that sets a scene. A diary entry’s clipped sentence or flourish of emotion becomes a line of verse. Even the gaps of things unsaid offer space for imagination. Writing poems inspired by these pieces allows us to honor the everyday beauty of memory and give voice to those who might not have thought their words mattered.

An inter-office memo became a love poem. A weather report, a line of longing. A journal entry, a conversation across time.

PS -- I never mentioned this issue before, but it helps if you know how to read cursive and/or handwriting before the 20th century. If you can't decipher letters, an elder can help (meaning, probably, over age 40 or so). Try a librarian, or perhaps a history teacher.

Share

Poetry Form Spotlight: The Epistolary Poem (Letter Poem)

The epistolary poem is a poem written as a letter. This form invites you to speak to someone either living or passed on, and you can draw directly from real or imagined letters. It’s also a wonderful way to respond to a diary entry or preserve one by reworking it in verse (we initially covered this poetry form in Sibling and Cousin Bonds).

Who might you write to?

An ancestor you never met

A diary writer whose pages you found

A mother who writes a light-hearted postcard to her daughter

Tip: Start with “Dear…” or another natural greeting. Keep the voice honest and personal. Use lines from the actual letter or diary if you have them, and add your reflections. This form blends found language and poetic imagination.

✍️ Mini-Prompt Box: Paper Voices

Pull out a letter or diary entry from your family papers (or imagine one). Read it slowly. Highlight a line or word that feels charged. Use that as your first or last line in a poem.

Prompt line example:
“Your handwriting leaned forward like it couldn’t wait to speak…”

Call to Action

Have you discovered old letters or journals in your family archive? Don’t let them stay silent. Write a poem in response, or let them shape a verse of their own. You don’t need to be an expert — just a listener, a translator of heart and ink.

If you create a poem inspired by a letter or diary, feel free to share it in the comments. Someone in the future may recognize the voice you’ve helped preserve.

Learn more about adapting letters and diaries to poetry at the Goin’ Poetic article for this week. Other objects may be shrouded in mystery -- why did the ancestors hold on to that corn cobb pipe, that silver-plated tray, those half-finished quilts? That pocket watch engraved with the initials of your third great-grandfather felt his gaze and his hands. Each keepsake is a doorway into ancestral memory.

I'll never forget seeing, for the first time, the "trunk" my ancestors brought from Wales on a ship. No bigger than a breadbox, that container held everything my ancestors wanted to carry to the new land in the late 1800s. I couldn't imagine what they decided to bring, and I doubt it was documented, but that image helped me imagine their voyage and hopes. Heirlooms provide a tangible foundation for poetry and storytelling, providing a window for us to imagine family rituals, migrations, and joys or sorrows.

Writing poetry about heirlooms helps to preserve family history. Our poems become insightful time capsules accessible to our descendants.

Share

Poetry Form Spotlight: The Object Poem

Why an Object Poem?

An object poem is a piece that praises or pays tribute to an object, no matter if is a sock or a family heirloom passed down through the ages. Write freely and let the shape come later.

You can also:

Interview a family member about a specific heirloom

Pair your poem with a photo of the object

Record yourself reading the poem and save it for your descendants

Your heirloom poems don’t just preserve the past—they awaken it. These documents create the scaffolding of family history research. They're rich with names, dates, occupations, and mysterious blanks. But how do we go from columns and clauses to something alive with emotion and memory? One powerful answer is poetry. Docupoetry is a thing! Check out this article to delve into one of the most interesting topics I've tackled to date (for me, at least!).

Poetry can allow us to fill in the rigid boundaries that documents provide with imagination and empathy. What did a widow think as she signed her "X" mark on a will? What stories live between the ten-year gaps in the census? Turning documents into verse doesn’t change the facts...it gives them voice.

You'll learn below that this voice often isn't pretty. Racial inequities, political policies that hurt individuals, and natural disastors all offer fodder for the documentary poem. Reality, also, is key in this genre. I give you a break both in the image above and in the prompt below to focus on something loving before you decide to dig deeper.

Share

Poetry Form Spotlight: The Found Poem

The found poem is a perfect match for document-based writing. It takes existing language from a will, land deed, or inventory list and transforms it into poetry by rearranging, spacing, or emphasizing certain phrases by using the "blackout method" to develop blackout poetry.

Why the found poem works:

It's rooted in real language—perfect for historical materials.

You don't need to invent anything—just select, shape, and feel.

It teaches us to listen closely to the original voice in the record.

How to begin:

Choose a single document such as a will, census form, or pension application.

Highlight or copy key phrases that resonate for you emotionally or that seem to tell a story.

Rearrange them in lines or stanzas. Add line breaks for rhythm.

Let the gaps and silences speak too.

Bonus Form: Epistolary Poems (poems in the form of letters) also work beautifully if you want to “respond” to the record from your ancestor’s or your own point of view.

🧵 Mini Prompt Box

Prompt:
You don’t need an original birth certificate or a distant ancestor’s journal to start. A single probate record or census listing can hold enough humanity to inspire a lifetime of poems. You can start with:

“The Williams-Jones marriage, announced yesterday...”

You might describe the medium (newspaper, census record, birth certificate), use the words, and imagine the outcome.

✍️ Call to Action: Your Turn to Find the Poem

Title: Your Ancestor’s Voice in the Records
Try this: Choose one historical document—such as a will, land record, or census page.

Highlight 5–10 striking or emotional phrases.

Rearrange them into a found poem.

If you'd like, add 1–2 of your own lines imagining what the person might say.

Give your poem a title based on the year, place, or record type.

This is your chance to bring their story to life—in just a few lines of verse. trees. They are living albums of memory — where stories are retold, hugs are exchanged, and the ties that bind are reknotted once again. For genealogists and family historians, reunions are also sacred opportunities to gather oral history, compare notes, and reconnect the branches of the family tree.

Writing about family reunions helps preserve these treasured moments before they slip away. It turns fleeting laughter into lasting verse, captures the feel of Aunt Margie’s squeeze or Grandpa’s smile, and holds onto names and faces that future generations might otherwise forget. Poetry can distill a weekend’s worth of emotions — joy, nostalgia, grief, pride — into a few perfect lines.

In doing so, we turn a picnic into a legacy.

Share

Poetry Form Spotlight: The Narrative Poem

Why Narrative Poetry?
Family reunions are stories waiting to be told. Narrative poems allow you to paint a scene, introduce characters, and move through time, all within the frame of verse. Why don't you recount the day Cousin Reggie broke the picnic table, or the moment two long-lost siblings met for the first time with a narrative poem? This format works to present actual events in poetry.

Tip: Try writing a paragraph first, then break it up into lines that make sense. Don't worry about rhyme. Use a Thesaurus to change alter words (try not to repeat a word unless it's intentional) so you offer variety and color. The result could be free verse or blank verse, another form of narrative.

Mini-Prompt Box: A Moment to Remember

Think of a moment from a family reunion — joyful, awkward, funny, or tender. Maybe it was the last time everyone saw Grandma together. Maybe a cousin played an old song on guitar, and people sang. Or maybe someone brought a photo album that connected everyone to a shared past. Start your poem with a detail from that moment.
Example prompt line:

“Someone set the potato salad down / beside the yearbook from ’72…”

Call to Action:

Have a family gathering coming up? Bring a notebook. Take photos. Capture one scene, one story, one smile, and start writing. Share it with your family, or tuck it into your keepsake box for the next generation. Every family has poetry in it. Yours is waiting to be written.

If you do write a poem, please share in the comments below.
