Computers, Cabbage, and Cataracts
Sometimes a long vacay is just what the social media doctor prescribed.
I had a fairly productive week. The cucumbers were dying back, so I cut them out of the ground and planted cabbage and broccoli (not in the same space, as they're not companion plants). My computer melted down like those cucumbers, and I had to call in a tech. He told me somewhere in our general conversation that he was autistic, and with that he asked me if I was. I asked him why he would ask, and he said, "Because you look like you're juggling about five special interests all at once."
I hired him on the spot. Like, for annual check-ups, too, just like a doctor.
Tucows/OpenSRS finally reached back out to me to ask if I still wanted help with the DNS. Of course, I do. So the saga continues, although I've been freeloading on CloudFlare. Now CloudFlare says my gardening site is seeing more threats than the average Joe website and they want me to buy a business plan.
Look, I want to support every business that does right by me. But, my gardening site is not yet a business. It's a hobby, dudes. That's why I haven't totally brushed off OpenSRS.
I know I must seem like a skinflint, trying to use free services everywhere, but there's a method to my madness. If I can get this to work, wouldn't you also want to play for free? That's what I thought.
Tomorrow I have my second cataract surgery, this time on the right eye. I'll be out of pocket for about two days. In fact, I don't plan to get much done this week at all. Maybe some content development, because I do feel guilty about not staying up to speed on that.
I also didn't look at the domain names for sale this past week, either. But I did learn a lot about what I don't need to be doing on social media. I don't need to be hovering over my pages like a helicopter parent. I posted some recipes on my Facebook page for My Mother's Recipes back in 2023, and then didn't post for almost a year. In that time, I went from basically no followers to 8.5K followers. I am posting a bit now, but I’m wondering why.
Sometimes it's good to take a long vacay. But, I’ll be back here next week. Unless, of course, something drastic happens to my temporal lobe. If that last sentence isn’t a nerdy, autistic, skinflint and just strange statement to make, I don’t know what is.
Maybe I need a doctor, too.
