Digital Asset Tips 2026
Treat Your Photographs Like They're Worth a Fortune III
Save Originals Before Editing
Editing is fine. Enhancing contrast, cropping, or cleaning up an image can make it more useful. But the original file, usually at a high resolution, is the true asset. This image requires attention and safe storage so you can refer to it later and use it again for a different project.
You already know how to label photos and store them in folders from previous articles this month. Now, focus on:
Keeping untouched originals
Saving edited versions as copies
Avoiding permanent overwrites
Why this matters:
Once an original is gone, it’s gone. Future tools, better software, or new purposes may need that untouched version.
Checklist:
☐ Do I know where my original files live? The cloud? External hard drive?
☐ Are edited versions clearly marked as edits? (So Important!)
☐ Have I avoided “Save Over Original”?
Try This (5-Minute Action):
Find one photo you’ve edited in the past.
Locate the original version and store it in a clearly labeled “Originals” folder. You may not have enough room on your computer to store all your original photos. This is where cloud storage or an external hard drive comes in handy.
