The Difference Between Income and Legacy Assets
Decide: Income Asset or Legacy Asset
A brief run-down on the difference between an income asset and a legacy asset. Assets include almost everything a person or business owns and controls that is monetary in value and can generate future revenue. The difference between an income asset and a legacy asset can be broken down as follows:
Income Assets: These assets generate immediate and consistent cash flow, such as interest, dividends, or rent. Examples include dividend-paying stocks, bonds, CDs, annuities, and real estate options. Generally, income assets are fluid. They offer high liquidity and yield.
Legacy Assets: These assets create a need for long-term wealth retention, a transfer to heirs, or something of sentimental, rather than financial value. Examples include a family business, a vacation home, heirloom jewelry, silverware, or other vintage or antique items, and inherited underperforming real estate. These items often offer much lower liquidity, and succeeding generations often do not want the burden of inheritance.
Wow. Did those descriptions mess up your plans or what? If you listen to the cues provided above, though, you can be clearheaded about what you have to offer your descendants, if anything. Plus, you can conduct some clean-up in the process.
Clarity reduces pressure and improves focus.
