This summer is hectic for us all, I’ve been told. I’ll agree on my end, to be sure! With that busyness in mind, I’m offering weekly microtips over the summer that can help you pull together your digital assets. Please use the comment section if you have ideas or questions. I’m never too busy for any of that.
✅ Week 1: Rename Your Digital Files for Future Clarity and to Save Time
Ever dig through your downloads and find “FinalVersion2-actualFINAL.pdf”? Yeah—me too.
Rename important digital files with clarity and keywords.
Instead of:
image123.jpg
Try:2024-yoursurname-family-photo-binghamtonNY.jpg
Instead of:
book.docx
Try:last-essay-forever-ch3-draft.docx
Why it matters:
You’ll find what you need faster
It helps others (and future-you) understand what the file contains
It makes organizing, archiving, or handing off files so much easier
If you cross that threshold, you won’t waste your beneficiary’s time
It only takes a minute, but it’s a game-changer.
📝 Mini-prompt: Rename 3 files today with clearer names—and breathe a little easier.

I do a lot of research and download loads of articles, documents, photos, etc. I create a folder for that topic and then use the same format for naming: year, month, day, article/document name, source, page 1 or 2, etc. Putting the year first orders the files in chronological order by year and makes it easier to find later.
